The Cord: Marathon Season 2 Launches on June 2nd, with Substantial Changes In Tow.
Dear Bungie,
Two days in a row, really? I’m already starting to understand why a certain someone is always late to, and under informed on, your news.
We had a Season 2 release date confirmation courtesy of the fine folks over at Bungie. On June 2nd, 2026, players can expect the launch of Season 2 in place of a regular “Weekly Patch”, following last week’s Xbox Store leak suggesting Season 1 would end by the 3rd and the announcement of Cryo Ranked all but confirming a first-week-of-June release.
But this wasn’t just a “save the date” announcement. Bungie also outlined a swathe of changes and rebalances to turbo charge the fuck out of the final weeks of the current season.
For the next few weeks, UESC presence across the game will increase considerably. Wardens will spawn at additional POIs across Perimeter, Dire Marsh, and Outpost, a new “aerial dropship” event is being added where UESC supply ships crash land with gear in tow, and Dire Marsh is getting a new boss specifically meant to crackdown on you meddling runners.
On May 21st, Cryo Archive will open permanently for the final 12 days of the season, overlapping with Cryo Ranked, which runs from May 24th through the 28th. (It was announced that Cryo Regular and Cryo Ranked will not be accessible at the same time, apologies for the mistake).
Faction XP gains are also being buffed to help players reach upgrade and VIP goals before the season ends.
As for Update 1.0.9, which we covered yesterday regarding streamer mode and self rez nerfs, Bungie is also making considerable changes to the Rook shell and the way Key Templates function in order to improve usage and convenience.
The Rook Shell’s “Signal Jammer” duration is being increased, while the radius at which AI can detect Rook is being reduced.
Key Templates are also changing from Fragile to Compromised, meaning they’ll now require Matter Fixatives instead of an exfil to be realized.
Outside of that, Bungie gave a fairly standard explanation of seasonal resets, so I won’t spend too much time there. But as a reminder: everything goes. Your vault, levels, wallet, upgrades, and rank are wiped. Cosmetic rewards and Codex Logs are safe, nothing else is. Ranked Titles are the one exception, carrying over into the following season, which Bungie says will remain true for all seasons moving forward.
Lastly, Bungie confirmed that players who’ve dedicated hours to the game can expect additional in-game rewards at the launch of Season 2, similar to the Server Slam rewards. Those rewards are as follows:
Season Level 10: Enhanced CyberAcme Sponsored Kit
Season Level 25: Enhanced CyberAcme Sponsored Kit
Season Level 50: Deluxe CyberAcme Sponsored Kit
Season Level 75: Superior CyberAcme Sponsored Kit
Overall, these changes seem aimed at solving one of Marathon’s biggest issues: player engagement during the back half of a season.
By increasing UESC activity, adding new events, and introducing another boss encounter, Bungie is trying to make the world feel less static in the latter half of the season, while creating more opportunities for player interaction and high-value engagements.
The permanent opening of Cryo Archive, alongside Cryo Ranked, also helps concentrate the playerbase into high octane activities before the reset instead of letting the season fizzle out.
Meanwhile, the Key Template and Rook Shell changes should reduce frustration while improving overall balance, and the XP buffs along side end-of-season rewards give players more incentive to keep grinding through the final weeks instead of checking out early.
Season 1 seems to be going out with a bang that would make Gantry_ blush. I’m all here for it.
