Good morning, it’s Tuesday. Marathon’s midseason update goes live this afternoon, and with it comes an extensive list of changes and additions aimed at addressing player pain points while introducing new ways to engage with the game in an attempt to draw a larger audience. We’ll briefly get through the need-to-knows and then move onto a bit of a different conversation. The marquee feature of this update is Marathon's first fully PvE experience: Vault Breaker, seemingly a Rogue-lite-horde-shooter. In this new mode, players are tasked with infiltrating Cryo Archive against UESC forces in an attempt to loot vaults and, if they're up for it, take a crack at the game's endgame encounter, the Compiler, all without having to contend with the looming threat of enemy Runners. Tuesday, May 12th 2026 – I’ve just had the chance to speak with the, now infamous, Marathon player NAPainter. We sat down for roughly 45 minutes to discuss last week’s “Compiler Loot Room OOB” exploit, which made its rounds on Twitter and quickly became one of the most defining controversies in the title's history. We spoke briefly about Painter’s experience with Bungie games dating back to his time with Destiny 2, and how he initially approached Marathon before getting into the elephant in the room; covering the exploit itself, his intentions, how the situation is being handled both in public and behind the scenes, the backlash, and ultimately what he thinks is an appropriate way to handle what he acknowledges was an egregious offense. Good morning, it is Tuesday. As of this writing, Marathon is currently down to address matchmaking issues from last week’s update. That’s its own can of worms, but there’s a more consistent issue looming over the game: cheaters. (This is aside from the other blog post I’ve been meaning to write about player psychology with Jamie (Sc0nesandc0ffee on Twitter), which is still coming.) We’re in Week 7 of Marathon. It’s been a largely wonderful experience, but as the season’s gone on, cracks have started to show. If left alone, they’ll fester into irreparable fractures and further erode trust from a community that keeps giving Bungie the benefit of the doubt. I’ve been called “toxically positive” a lot. I do enjoy the game and say so, but I’ve never avoided being critical when it matters. This is one of those times. I don’t get paid by Bungie, and I’m not muzzling myself for anyone.
