State of Play(station).

I’ve just come off of watching Playstation’s June 4th “State of Play”, their stake in the E3-but-not-E3-Season, aka “Keigh3”, aka “Summer Games Fest”. And honestly? It’s not so much that I’m not impressed (and to be honest, I am not ), it’s that I am categorically tired . I’m fucking exhausted .  In 2020 SIE held its inaugural “Playstation Showcase” to set the stage for its then-upcoming Playstation 5. During this showcase, Sony gave viewers a look at the following titles: Final Fantasy XVI Spider-Man: Miles Morales Hogwarts Legacy, Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War Resident Evil Village Deathloop Devil May Cry 5: Special Edition Oddworld: Soulstorm Five Nights at Freddy's: Security Breach Demon's Souls Fortnite Battle Royale God of War Ragnarök The titles in bold were exclusives, console exclusives, or timed exclusives. In any configuration, these were titles that told you, the viewer, that you had to buy a PS5, that these titles wouldn't be guaranteed anywhere else, th...

Elden Ring: Emboldened By The Flame of Ambition

Image
There is, almost certainly, no possibility that you haven't heard of notorious-video-game-developer FromSoftware's monumental Elden Ring . Though, for the uninitiated (or, people who live under a rock (increasingly tempting proposition these days)); Elden Ring  is an action-RPG developed by FromSoftware, which released in 2022. A true amalgamation of the studio's 28 years of experience, the title is a monumental achievement both critically and commercially, arguably redefining what it meant to be an "open-world" game in an industry that was, and still is , proliferated by an abundance of mediocre competitors. As of April 2025, Elden Ring  would prove to be an unprecedented, colossal success, with FromSoftware's publisher, Bandai Namco, announcing that the title had sold through 30 million units across all platforms. It makes it that much more important to note that the studio's titles were considered incredibly niche due to their unforgiving, if not outr...

Bungie's Marathon Stumbles Miles From The Finish Line, Can It Rally?

Image
I've been a strong supporter of Marathon since its unveiling, to the point where I've written multiple blog posts about it and where I saw its potential success coming from. I've been fair and impartial in my criticism as the title has unfairly had "Concord 2.0" thrown at it. I noted critiques I had with the game, concerns about its alpha state, and wondered whether or not such a niche subgenre would be viable the way Bungie needed it to be. It's one thing to make a niche game, it's another when you bank your studio's future on it. So believe me when I say, I’m not turning on the game out of spite, bandwagoning, or a witch hunt. I wanted this game to succeed, part of me still hopes Bungie figures out whatever the gilded fuck is going on at their HQ, rather, I’ve been embarrassed by Bungie, and that needs no explanation. For months I've seen people attempt to tear down the game in its infancy for subjective, exaggerated reasons. However, with the pl...

The Netflix Issue

Image
Good morning, been a few days. I know I made an initial habit of having a new post up every weekday, but I got to the point where I felt like I was forcing it a bit, I don’t want this to feel like a chore. Moving forward, I’ll post regularly but don’t expect something new every single day. Sometimes I just have nothing to write about. I do have something I want to talk about today, it’s actually been bothering me for a while and I never really figured out how I wanted to go about discussing it. As you can probably tell from the title, I want to talk about subscription models, but specifically how they’ve destroyed consumer markets, fair trade, and will probably be the endgame for many, if not most, industries. We’ll start with the most well known and widespread offender and move through some unfortunately harrowing extrapolations. Netflix. I’ve had it, you’ve had it, 300 million people have it as of 2024. When it came out, I think Netflix offered an undeniable packa...
